Recovery Room Theatre Nurse at Beit CURE Hospital

The Recovery Nurse will provide care for patients recovering from general, regional or local anesthesia as well as maintain their safety. She/he will work as part of a team to provide a safe, cost effective, efficient care environment for patients, relatives and caregivers. The nurse will be expected to function clinically within the Operating Department and other associated areas as required such as the ward/OPD/Pharmacy. She/he will participate in the training of junior staff and continue their own personal and professional development by rotating within the theatre department.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Reports to shift on time
    2. Contributes to devotional time
    3. Demonstrates a positive rapport and cooperative work relationship with associates.
    4. Displays a willingness to learn new skills, concepts etc.
    5. Demonstrates a caring, Christ-like attitude toward patients, their families and staff.
    6. Communicates effectively with other disciplines within the facility to ensure a continuum of patient care.
    7. Follows instructions when given by OR Nurse-in-charge.
    8. Maintains confidentiality of all CURE patient records and only discusses patient data that is pertinent to the involved health care provider.
    9. Demonstrates respect for all patients regardless of tribal origin, gender, race, religion, disease process or financial status.
    10. Takes into consideration and assures patient’s rights of confidentiality, dignity and privacy.
    11. Practices Universal Precautions on all patients.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  1. A recovery room nurse provides constant care to patients immediately following surgery and ensures a safe environment.
    2. Patient monitoring of vital signs on a regular basis, ensuring that the patient is breathing and must report any signs of negative physical changes to the Anesthetist.
    3. The nurse must observe the patient to assess their level of comfort, pain and administers pain medications that have been prescribed.
    4. Assists with daily routines of OR as instructed by the in-charge.
    5. The nurse must be able to use the monitors, warmers and all the equipment in PACU.
    6. The nurse must keep DDA and medicine stocks up to date under lock and key.
    7. Helps in packing of sets for sterilization, Keeps PACU and autoclave room well organized.
    8. The nurse makes theatre documentation of records, and communicates information in verbal or written form to other theatre staff, the ward and to physicians.
    9. Receives and hands over surgical patients at the receiving bay to and from the ward and theatre.
    10. The recovery room nurse can work any type of shift as needed.

CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:



  1. Assists in the updating of Professional practice/procedures in line with current evidence based research.
    2. Contributes to the learning environment conducive for theater nurses and other healthcare staff.
    3. Assists in the implementation of Cure International policies and procedures as outlined in the policy document.
    4. Maintains own personal profile and ensures that they meet the requirements for license renewal by the General Nursing Council of Zambia (GNC).
    5. Education and Training by attending all mandatory training and ensuring that renewals are booked in a timely manner as agreed by the Theatre manager such as Fire training.
    6. Successfully complete key learning courses from the Online Educational Portal as mandated by the program managers/matron.
    7. Initiate own professional development within agreed parameters and be involved in any aspects of training that is important for the whole surgical team such as infection control.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Full grade twelve (12) certificate.
    2. Diploma in Theatre Nursing, Degree will be an added advantage.
    3. Minimum of 2-3 years experience in theatre recovery room/PACU.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  1. Must possess strong organizational and administrative skills.
    2. Ability to effectively teach medical techniques & skills to other medical personnel
    3. Excellent inter-personal and communication skills with good listening skills
    4. Have a strong sense of personal and team accountability
    5. Able to multitask , fluent in English and two local languages
