Lubambe Copper Mine is located within the Greater Konkola Area of the Zambian Copperbelt and consists of a large – scale mining license covering an area of approximately 228 square kilometres.

Completed and commissioned in 2012, Lubambe is an underground operation supported by a shaft and decline access with a 2.5 million tonne per annum capacity ore concentrator. The mine’s current depth is 450 meters producing a high-grade copper concentrate which is then treated at Zambian smelters.

The mine currently employs 1,000 direct employees and a further 1,400 contractors. It places the highest priority on safety with a world class safety system.

Supporting local communities and suppliers is a key business focus of the mine.

EMR Capital owns an 80% controlling interest in Lubambe while ZCCM-IH owns 20%.

The Mine seeks to employ an experienced and qualified individual in the following position:

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER (x1)

This position reports to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Core Purpose of the Position

The primary purpose of this role is to be responsible for the identification of ground conditions with appropriate support recommendation and ensuring compliance to specification for ground control strategies

Key Performance Areas/Indicators (KPA/Is):



  • Develop and maintain a risk register (Hazard Maps) for all production related activities and enforce requirements
  • Ensure all ground control management plans, procedures, standards and systems are implemented and maintained to mitigate risk to as low as reasonably practicable
  • Ensure thorough and prompt incident/accident reporting & maintain involvement in safety initiatives to ensure a safe work environment. All fall of ground accidents should be investigated and documented
  • Coordinate data acquisition programs (core logging, mapping and instrumentation) and update all databases
  • Actively promote safe production through implementation of best practice methods of operation into design and regular review/audit of existing practices
  • Understand and ensure compliance with all legislative and statutory responsibilities and environmental standards
  • Ensure timely geotechnical advice is provided as required, ground support layouts must be made available on time and must be well documented

Academic Qualifications and Experience



  • Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering/BSc Mining obtained from a recognised institution
  • Strata Control Certificate
  • Member of Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ)
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in Geotechnical/Rock Mechanics in underground mining operations including mechanised open stoping & jumbo development
  • Proficient user of relevant Geotechnical software including but not limited to AutoCAD, Gem4D, Map3D, Unwedge, Dips, RS2, RS3, InSAR Monitoring
  • Strong understanding of ground monitoring and instrumentation
  • Holder of a current Zambian blasting licence
  • Holder of valid First Aid Certificate
